Deliverables
What you can do with the data from our 3D scanning services
Laser scan data is CMM data, backed by our ISO 17025 certified laboratory.
Print inspection
Check dimensions against your print.
Deviation color maps
Scan-to-CAD plots that show where a part is off.
Scan-to-scan comparison
Compare future parts to a scanned original.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose product problems from real geometry.
CAD model creation
STLs or 3D CAD in your software of choice.
Reverse engineering
Recreate one-of-a-kind parts and analyze competitors.
A permanent digital twin
Skip the library of first-run parts. Scan data does not change with time, can be recalled from anywhere, and can yield dimensions you did not need on day one.
Free PolyWorks viewer
On request, view and rotate the raw point cloud against your CAD. Ideal for web meetings and customer presentations.
Pricing

Scanner purchase and service cost
Considering your own laser scanner?
A quality scanner and software purchase can cost $50,000 to $100,000 or more. Use our service as a bridge to that purchase.
- 1Hire us for your project and get results from an experienced engineer fast.
- 2Evaluate the point cloud data to confirm a scanner delivers the value you need.
- 3Use the service cost to justify the equipment, software and training for your own operation.
How we price a project
An experienced engineer quotes the number of hours your project will take, then applies our internal hourly rates.
Laser design
How 3D laser scanning works
Laser line probes project rows of invisible laser dots onto a surface. A camera set at a small angle reads them, collecting up to 500,000 points per second.
The camera must see the laser dots to register data.
- Laser on one side of a tall rib and camera on the other means no data for that area.
- Holes behave the same way: the laser reaches deep, but the camera only sees the top surface at its angle.
- This applies to every commercially available laser scanner.
Equipment
Laser scanner manufacturers and laser vs. fixed CMM scanning
We use, and have been asked to give feedback on, instruments from each of these makers. Each has trade-offs.
Scanner types and comparison
Faro, Hexagon
Portable arm scanners
- Easier to use and program
- Easy to manipulate for unique projects
- Travel to your site
Nikon, Zeiss
CMM-mounted laser scanners
- More accurate, but not portable
- Longer to program, less flexible
- Best for high-volume automation
- Older CMMs may need upgrades
| Feature | Laser scanning | Fixed CMM touch scanning |
|---|---|---|
| Contact with part | Touchless | Probe touches the surface |
| Data density | Dense, usually millions of points | Relatively sparse coverage |
| Accuracy | High | Generally more accurate per point |
| Shiny surfaces | May need a light powder or paint | Not a concern for the probe |
Cannot touch the surface or apply paint or powder (potential FOD)? Look at another technology, such as CT scanning.
Training
Training for 3D laser scanning services near me
Training and programming
Onsite training
- One set price for as many of your staff as you wish. Fewer staff means more one-on-one time.
- We train to your parts and your prints, not a standard part or training book.
- Trainers are experienced in GD&T and have interpreted hundreds of prints.
Programming services
Jump start your newly trained staff. Send us a print and a copy of your part, and we program and test the scanning routine here in our Cincinnati, Ohio office.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are Laser Scanning Services?
Laser scanning services involve using laser technology to capture detailed spatial information, creating precise 3D models or representations of physical objects and environments. These services find applications in various fields, including architecture, reverse engineering, construction projects, and more.
How Accurate is Laser Scanning?
Laser scanning is known for its high accuracy in capturing spatial data. The precision depends on the specific technology and equipment used, but in general, laser scanning can achieve low thousandths-of-an-inch to low millimeter range accuracy, making it suitable for applications requiring detailed and precise measurements.
